Why Our Program? How to Answer This Common Supplemental Essay and Interview Question

May 9, 2023 By Stephen Pasquini PA-C Leave a Comment

Why our program How to answer this common supplemental essay and interview question

Why our program?

As you begin your PA school application process, one of the most common supplemental essay and interview questions you may encounter is, "Why our program?"

This is an opportunity for you to explain why you are specifically interested in attending that particular college or university and why it is a good fit for you.

In this recent webinar on supplemental essay strategies, we shared some tips on how to answer this question effectively.

In this blog post, we will go into detail on how to answer this question specifically - breaking down each of the essential elements and providing examples of how to incorporate them into your response.

1. Look at the Program's Mission, Vision, Values, and Goals

The mission, vision, values, and goals of the program are important to understand because they give insight into what the program stands for and what they hope to achieve.

Look at their website, attend an info session, and read about alumni experiences to get a better understanding of the program's values and goals.

Use this information to frame your answer to the prompt by highlighting how your goals align with those of the program.

2. Evaluate Their Academics and Facilities

Academics are an essential factor in deciding which PA program to choose. Look for what's unique about the program and what aligns with your learning style.

If a program has state-of-the-art facilities like a cadaver lab, simulation lab, or specialized library, this may give them a significant advantage over other programs. If you're a hands-on learner, for example, a cadaver lab may be a significant draw for you.

Alternatively, if you're attracted to innovation, a school with digital cadaver labs may be more appealing. Be specific about why their academic structure is a good fit for you.

3. Consider Their Reputation

A program's reputation is another crucial factor in choosing a program. Don't just look at the program's PANCE pass rates; instead, focus on what alumni say about the program. Their experiences can give you an idea of what to expect when you attend the program.

Consider reaching out to alumni to learn more about their experiences and how they prepared for their careers.

4. Highlight Their Faculty

Faculty can play a vital role in your education, so it's worth researching them before applying. Look for a unique profile of a faculty member whose research intrigues you. If you're interested in working with a particular professor, be sure to mention their research and why it aligns with your interests.

5. Commitment to Community Outreach/Clinics

Many programs have a commitment to community outreach and clinics where students can gain hands-on experience.

If a program has a community outreach program or clinic, it can be a great opportunity to learn about the patient population and their unique issues. This is especially beneficial if you have a location-based connection to the school, as you can show the admissions committee that you are committed to serving the local community and gaining valuable experience you can use in your practice.

Having a future vision for your career is crucial in this regard. For example, if your goal as a PA is to work in a specific community, it makes sense to attend a PA program in that community. This will enable you to gain firsthand experience working with the patient population and learning about their unique issues. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to build networks within the healthcare system that will be valuable to you as a future healthcare provider.

Being able to refer patients to the right specialist for their particular issue is a key skill for any healthcare provider. By participating in community outreach and clinics, you can develop personal connections with other healthcare professionals and gain a better understanding of the resources available to patients in that community. This, in turn, will enable you to provide a better experience for your patients overall.

It is important to ground your commitment to community outreach and clinics in your personal goals and aspirations. By explaining why you want to serve a specific community, you can demonstrate to admissions committees that you are committed to making a difference in people's lives.

Additionally, if you have experience working with different populations, this can also be valuable in showing that you are open to learning and growing as a healthcare provider.

6. Use Multiple Sources

Use multiple sources to research the program, including the program's website, info sessions, and alumni.

Look for consistent information across these sources to ensure that you have a good understanding of the program.

Putting it all together

When crafting your response, use a structure that includes a thesis statement, the rule of three, and a summary conclusion.

Pick the three most important factors from the list above that align with your goals and highlight them in your response. Use a strong topic sentence, example, and concluding sentence for each body paragraph. If the character count is limited, one to two paragraphs may be sufficient.

Use the school's abbreviation where possible to save on space. Finally, conclude by summarizing your response and emphasizing how your goals align with the program.

Testimonials

Thank you once again for your help in reviewing and editing my personal statement for PA school. Yesterday morning, I had the pleasure of accepting a position in the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston Physician Assistant Program. The class begins in July 2022, and I am excited to begin this next chapter of entering the PA profession. I have no doubt that your invaluable assistance helped me produce a personal statement that promoted my application and paved the way for my successful interview, and I am sincerely grateful.
Angela, PA-S
I wanted you to know about my acceptance into Elizabethtown College’s PA program. I am incredibly excited – I loved the school, the program and thought the staff was incredible, especially the director. I know my personal statement was a key component of getting an interview with them, and I am so thankful for your help in getting my statement polished!
Steve, PA-S
AMAZING EDITS. Really opened my eyes to a new perspective of what a personal statement should really be like!
Jasmine, Pre-PA
An amazing experience. Glad to have worked with Duke. He did his best, and it was very enjoyable.
Anand T. Pre-PA
This is Tyler. I hope you remember helping me with my essay back in May. As promised, I wanted to update you with news of my PA school journey and I am excited to tell you that I was accepted to Stony Brook’s PA program!! THANK YOU VERY MUCH for helping me write an essay that was truly reflective of who I am as a candidate and as a person! It played a pivotal role in this whole nerve-racking process and has helped me achieve a major life goal. You are a godsend to Pre-PA students.
Tyler, PA-S
Duke helped me write a great personal statement. I won’t know if I’ve been accepted to the program until Christmas/New Year’s, but I feel that it was worth every penny!
Alicia C. Pre-PA
I just wanted to send you a quick email, letting you know that I finally got accepted into PA school! I will be attending Sacred Heart University in Connecticut and will be starting this fall. I could not have made it this far without your help! This was my third time applying and during my first two cycles, I didn’t think that I needed outside help. But this time around, I decided that I needed to change my tactic and I am so freaking happy that I did. Your guidance and advice on my personal statement absolutely made a difference. I had 6 interviews and got accepted into 4! You have helped changed my life and I am forever grateful. I have several friends who will be applying this cycle so I will be referring them to you!
Christian, Pre-PA
Sarah is absolutely amazing and really helped transform my essay into the best version it could have possibly been!
Shannon B. Pre-PA
I just wanted to give you an update! So far I have had two interviews and been accepted to both! I have three more interviews scheduled as of right now, and still waiting to hear from a handful of schools. Thank you so much for all of your help with my essay!
Jennifer Bidwell, PA-S
Sarah is the best! She gets me and puts all her efforts for my message to come across in a clear and concise way. Obviously, her editing skills are superb! But she also has a very sweet and pleasant way of being. I highly recommend Sarah and the PA Life Personal Statement Collaborative. I have not yet received an interview, but keeping my fingers crossed!
Raquel Poliwoda Pre-PA
Oh my gosh thank you SOO much!!! I have been so busy with school so I haven’t been able to edit my personal statement, but I want to thank you soo much for making my statement look a heck of a lot better!!! I will be editing it over my spring break since that is the only free time I have, and I most likely will do a re-edit if I can (its $35 ish right?). Anyways thank you so much again!! Sorry for the late reply but I will get back to you again during my spring break if I need a second edit, thank you so much again for all your help!! I can already see how much of a difference you’ve made! Totally worth my money!
Melat Ashagre, Pre-PA
Carly was excellent! Not only did she make my essay much more compelling, but she understood the deadlines I wanted to reach and helped me do that! 10/10!!
Jesse Cordova, Pre-PA
Sue did an exemplary job at editing my personal statement. Her service was particularly useful once my essay was ready for fine polishing and trimming down – she really pulled the fat off leaving the meat of my personal statement remaining. I would recommend this service to others.
Sarah, Pre-PA
I just want to thank you again so much for being so awesome and helping me perfect my statement. I promised you that I would let you know if I got into any programs, and I was offered interviews at all the five universities I applied to. And I got offered positions at my top two school choices shortly after I interviewed. I am so ecstatic to say that I will be going to my number one school choice. I know multiple factors contributed to this opportunity being offered to me and the personal statement was surely a big one. Thank you so much for all that you do. It was really a great investment to have you edit my paper. I hope you have a fantastic rest of your day!
Elisa, PA-S
Carly was so helpful and encouraging! I truly felt like I was in good hands, and I know my personal statement is much stronger now because of her!
Chloe, Pre-PA
I just wanted to update you that I got waitlisted for Drexel but accept to Dominican University of California. I still have other interviews coming up. Thank you for your help!
Karmen Wu, Pre-PA
Sarah was amazing! She was able to help me organize my thoughts and put my thoughts in words better than I ever could! She was prompt with her editing and helped stretch my comfort zone in writing. I really appreciate her creativity! I’d highly recommend Sarah and The PA Life editing service, as thier feedback was very helpful and encouraging at the same time. Thank you so much!
Elaine, Pre-PA
Sue Edmondson was VERY thorough in her editing of my essay, as well as the promptness of her responses to me. She not only took the time to edit the grammar of my essay but helped me remove a large portion of it to focus on the important aspects of it and draw in more details. Overall, a fantastic service!
Megan Hunstad, Pre-PA
Sarah was a pleasure to work with the entire time. I felt very overwhelmed when I was working on my personal statement on my own, but once I started working with Sarah, she made me feel at ease while getting my personal statement to look its best. Sarah is very knowledgeable, understanding, and professional. One of the things I loved the most about working with her is that no matter the time of the day she was always available and got back to you in a timely manner. The whole time we worked on my personal statement she made sure I felt comfortable with changes that had to be made and I appreciated this as well. Sarah is excellent at what she does and I would recommend her and this one on one service to anyone that needs it.
Odilia, Pre-PA
I am very happy with your service and would highly recommend it to any PA applicant. Duke helped me to put my thoughts in order and to make significant changes. My personal statement sounds great and seems easy and interesting to read now.  He took a lot of time to explain his way of thinking and to understand what I am trying to say. Thank you so much for your help. I really appreciate what you are doing for others.
Olga N. Pre-PA
I was very pleased working with Duke on my personal statement. I’m currently in the middle of applying to PA school, so I haven’t heard back from the programs. I’m looking forward to the experience though.
John R. Pre-PA
I read my personal statement again today and got the chills. I am so happy with it and just wanted to thank you for all your help with my PA school essay!
Mikaela, Pre-PA
Your services have eased the stress and anxiety that results from guessing whether or not your essay contains the content that many PA programs are looking for. Your services were prompt and genuine. It is clear that you have the applicant’s success at heart. Thank you!
Madison Pre-PA
Loved this service and working with Sarah. She was super helpful and easy to talk with. Will definitely recommend this service to others.
Diana, Pre-PA
Sarah was amazing! She completely transformed my essay and helped include other important key points that I was previously missing in my essay. The editing process was simple and it was easy to collaborate on google docs. I would 100% recommend The PA Life editing service to my friends and people who just need that extra help to make their essay stand out to admission committees. I look forward to this application cycle with my new essay!
Myriam, Pre-PA
Deanna was an absolute joy to work with. Not only was she a wonderful writer and editor, but she helped me develop my thoughts and produce a personal statement I was proud to submit. She helped me refine my ideas, and concise my writing to illustrate my reasons for wanting this career. She was also very prompt in responding to my emails and questions. I am very happy with my personal statement and would recommend this service to anyone who is considering this service or feels stuck in their writing process.
Maddie, Pre-PA
I’m so happy with the amount of time and attention that Duke and Sue put into helping perfect my essay. I’m extremely fortunate to have come across Stephen’s page and this opportunity- I would have sent in an essay that unknown to me at the time, had issues and needed many improvements. I’m almost to the point where I’m going to submit my application, and will definitely update the team on prospective interviews. I cannot thank you guys enough for having this essay review service available, you definitely make it worth every dollar and more.
Tiffany Ly, Pre-PA
My editor was Beth, and she blew my expectations out of the water. She got back to me within 24 hours of submitting my request for edits and helped me so much with the edits she made. If I receive an interview, I am excited to use PA Life to help me with mock interviews.
Haley, Pre-PA
I just wanted to let you know I was accepted to Mercy College’s PA Program last night! To say I’m ecstatic is an understatement! I wanted to thank you once again for all of your help with my essays and my interview. You helped me so much with everything and I couldn’t have done it without you! Thank you for everything.
Anna Mantikas, PA-S
I worked with Duke to edit and complete my essay. It was a terrific experience that I would recommend to everyone! Duke has an amazing ability to help you move things around and change it a little, while still making it feel like 100% your own work. We talked out every change we made, and we both conceded to each other in different places. He made extra time for me when I got stressed out about the deadline, and worked with me for a while each time we sat down. I paid $199 for this service, and I think that was the best bargain I ever got! I have been invited back to submit supplemental applications to some schools, and I will keep the team updated about my interviews. Thanks Duke!!!
Carly Bransky, Pre-PA
I was extremely stressed out about writing my personal statement, and finally decided to search the internet for advice and assistance. I came across the personal statement editing service on the PA Life, and decided to give it a try. I received a response within a day, and my stress was instantly relieved. I worked personally with Duke to edit my statement, and he is a phenomenal writer. He didn’t change the content of my statement, but rather helped me tell my story in a way that is much more desirable! I cannot recommend this service enough to others seeking help on their personal statement. Duke was friendly, sincere, and definitely experienced! Thank you so much for making the personal statement process less stressful! Although I had been planning and brainstorming for months, the process of writing my journey in 5,000 characters was just daunting and overwhelming. Thank you so much for your kindness, flexibility, and your patience that helped me through this process. I appreciate how you listened and incorporated my feedback to make my personal statement a work of art that is truly representative of ME! I would highly recommend your services to any aspiring PA students who feel lost or overwhelmed by the process. Thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Thank you so much for helping me with my physician assistant program application essays and interview! I am so excited to let you know that I received multiple PA school acceptances and have decided that I will be attending Cornell University’s PA Program in New York City. Christine Chen, PA-S
I felt our mock interview was an absolute necessity to prepare for the Academic and Personal interviews from Yale School of Medicine PA Program Online. I felt the calibre of questions you had asked me, in addition to the coaching and post-question feedback, really helped me understand what an ideal response looks like and gave me time to reflect and prepare my responses for the formal interview just two days later. During my interviews I was asked plenty of questions I didn’t have a prepared response to (and I had combed through tons especially in the days following our mock interview!) I can say that I answered each question genuinely, authentically, and showed both interviewers the best version of myself. I didn’t stammer or lose my place, and I felt confident in my words and expressions. I don’t think I would have been as comfortable, calm, or confident without having accepted your guidance and feedback and learned from our time together. Gratitude for your words, encouragement, and support is an understatement. Thank you, Sarah! Best Regards, Jacob
Jacob, PRE-PA
This is just a great service overall, because not only is it an editing service, it is specific to the PA personal statement. Sue did a wonderful job editing my essay, and pointed out important flaws in it that I otherwise might not have noticed. Her edits highlighted the main points that I was trying to get across in a much better way than I had originally written. Overall, very satisfied with the results, and will have to keep you updated about the interviews. Thanks so much!

I am so thankful that this editing service exists. The personal statement is incredibly important which is why I was so nervous about it. It took me two weeks to even get started because I was so nervous about writing the wrong thing. After Carly helped me with my essay, I am now so much more confident in it. Her edits were very thorough and showed that she had a really good understanding of what is important for a PA personal statement. Her email detailing her overall impression of my essay also showed she understood every single point I was trying to make and what kind of feeling I was trying to give to people reading my essay. This has been the most reassuring thing.
Angela, Pre-PA

Holy cow! I wanted to let you know I have been accepted to PA school.  I will be attending the Franklin Pierce Physician Assistant Program, Class of 2019 in West Lebanon, NH. I cannot thank you enough for being part of my journey. If you are reading this you might have been like me skeptical and trying to find a way to write a stellar essay for your PA application.  I want to share with you my exceptional experience using this service.  First, do yourself a favor and BUY the eBook, “How to Write Your Physician Assistant Personal Statement.”  I read it twice. Once before I started my essay draft and then again during.  I cannot stress how helpful the book was in clearly stating what the Admissions Directors are looking for in an application essay.  Next, the book reviews how to formulate a proper essay with clear instructions, easy reminders of the writing process, and excellent examples of good and bad writing choices.  After several drafts of my essay, I made an appointment to work with Duke Pasquini, one of the authors of the guide, through the internet and via phone to help with editing and my length issue.  Duke’s professional experience and kind and straight forward demeanor allowed me to create a winning essay that was an authentic representation of me.  Not only did I receive an interview from my top choice of PA school I was accepted a week later into their Physician Assistant Program, Class of 2019.  Thank you, “PA Life” for being a part of my journey.
Michele Williams, PA-S

I used the personal statement editing service through The PA Life, and I worked with Sarah. She was AMAZING and made such a difference in both the quality of my personal statement and in my confidence as an applicant. That said, I’m so grateful to say I’ve been accepted into two out of the three programs I applied to and have an interview with the third on Friday of this week. I couldn’t be more excited!
Nikki, PA-S
Sarah was a joy to work with! She was extremely helpful and patient with any questions I had for her! 10/10 recommend using this service!
Lori, Pre-PA
Sarah Morris Schultz was my PA statement editor and she was absolutely fabulous! She helped to shave my original 4-page long, winding PA statement down to a 2 page impactful, poignant, moving statement that lead me to get accepted to a Doctor of Medical Science program in Physician Assistant Studies. She has such a gift for writing and knowing how to say things in just the right way and use the right words! One of the DMS PA program committee members started off my video conference online interview by stating that my PA statement was the best he ever read, not “one of the best” but THE BEST statement. My heart leapt. My PA statement years ago had caused me NOT to get accepted to the school that I had hoped. I did get accepted to a good PA school, got my degree, and started practicing in this field that I love. However, this time I decided to humble myself and get help writing a good statement. Praise God, it paid off. I am so grateful for the PA Life service and fee for the one-on-one service is worth every penny! I recommend everyone get Sarah Morris Schultz. She’s the bomb.com! I love you, Sarah 🙂

I am so thrilled with my result!

Really great service, definitely worth the money! I am very pleased with the amount of work that went into editing my paper and giving reasons as to why sentences or paragraphs were changed around. Carly did an amazing job!
Christina, Pre-PA
I want to say thank you, first off for providing such a service. It was difficult having to write a personal statement and then have others critique it, when there is not a clear rubric to follow. I think having to write a personal statement is such an emotional process, and then having others edit it, can be a very harsh pill to swallow. Thank you for your edits, I have no doubt that this process will make my personal statement more compelling and hopefully a more competitive applicant.
Stephanie, Pre-PA
The edit that I received from Sue was exactly what I was hoping for. She was able to tighten up my draft beyond my personal skill level and made edits that I was would have never thought to make. She has definitely made my personal statement stronger. Thank you, Sue!

I had an overall great experience working with Duke. He was open to my suggestions and provided great feedback on my essay. So far I haven’t gotten any interviews yet, but it is still early in the process. I will keep you updated when I get interviews. Steve

I just wanted to take a moment and say thank you. I can’t express how grateful I am to have found PA Life and to have had the chance to work with you. My personal statement was something I had been dreading because, as I mentioned, I know my writing can be dry, but you helped me make my personal statement into something I believe is memorable and realistic. Hopefully, I can send you the news when I get an interview and, eventually, an acceptance letter. I will definitely recommend PA Life to any PA student “hopefuls” in the future. Thank you again for your time. Take care, and I hope to write to you again with good news.

I enjoy working with Beth she literally turned my “hot mess” of an essay into something amazing and readable. She made my story flow, helped me get to my main points and interesting to read. I am very confident with sending off my personal statement to PA schools this upcoming spring. No invite just yet but I know I will get some invites this same cycle.
Maggie Kabongo, Pre-PA
I have used The PA Life services throughout my application process this year and I am 100% satisfied! Sarah helped me with my personal statement and mock interviewing. As a second time applicant, she really helped me strengthen my statement to convey my story of why I wanted to be a PA. I felt very confident in submitting my statement thanks to her review and was later invited for my first interview! The mock interview service was EXTREMELY helpful. Sarah provided excellent feedback during our session on how I could better rephrase my responses to make them stronger, but still, sound natural and true to myself. The session eased a lot of the interview nerves I had that come interview day I felt pretty confident. I’m proud to say that after my first interview, I was accepted! Thank you, Sarah, for all of your help throughout my PA journey!
Amanda B, Pre-PA
My editor with The PA Life was amazing! I will definitely suggest these services to anyone else applying to PA school. Thank you for everything!
